Eating

The American Diet is basically 46% Carbohydrates and 11% Protein. As you can tell, there is a big difference between those two levels. Since there is such a big difference that also means that there is a big difference between Insulin and Glucagon. People who are eating the "standard" high Carbohydrate Diet have elevated levels of insulin.

Any diet program (Atkins, South Beach, etc.) that focuses on high protein with low carbs, is basically good for glucagon release.

Protein consumption increases glucagon relative to insulin, while carbohydrates do the reverse. This unique hormonal balance enhances fat usage and what is known as the thermic effect of food, which is an increased period of calorie usage induced by foods with extra protein and fiber that stimulate enhanced fat burning.

Tips

  • Limit number of meals and snacks, every time you eat insulin goes up and glucagon goes down
  • Don't drink your sugars, avoid energy drinks. If you need caffeine try caffeine tablets. Caffeine tabs are usually 200mg, you can cut in half or quarters based on your needs.
  • Drink lots of water- when fat is broken down ketones are produced; excess ketones are released through urine.
  • Don't eat at least one hour before you go to bed at night

Exercise

Plasma glucagon concentrations are increased during exercise. Mild exercise at 40% maximal capacity for durations of 40 to 120 minutes results in 20% increase in glucagon. Moderate-intensity exercise (55 % to 65% maximal capacity) for 90 minutes results in 40 % to 50% increase.


Tips
  • Exercising first thing in the morning on an empty stomach provides the most optimal glucagon release and fat burning benefits.
  • Don't be afraid to do heavy weight training… Women will not become bulky and masculine, unless they are doing large amounts of anabolic steroids.
  • Do some type of exercise every day.
